So, a close friend and I have been having this debate.

He feels that since In Rainbows that Radiohead have slowly been drifting towards "adult contemporary".

Especially with A Moon Shaped Pool.

He's a huge fan of the band.........they're his favorite band actually.

Anyway, i think the whole idea of them being classified as adult contemporary is fucking asinine.

If you look up current contemporary artists you see people like Adele, Ed Sheerhan, Kelly Clarkson, etc...........and then the older artists like Elton John, Barbara Streisand, and all that.

So, i was curious........what say you guys?

It's kind of a ridiculous argument, no?

He also sent a link from salon.com that asked if radiohead and wilco were the "new" adult contemporary.

I vehemently disagree with the notion.  Radiohead are way too dark and weird for that genre.

It's honestly nothing worth getting worked up over. A bit weird to call them that but still not worth the fuss.

According to the wiki definition of Adult Contemporary

''Adult contemporary music (AC) is a form of radio-played popular music, ranging from 1960s vocal and 1970s soft rock music to predominantly ballad-heavy music of the present day, with varying degrees of easy listening, pop, soul, rhythm and blues, quiet storm, and rock influence.''

Hardly any of those things can apply to Radiohead.

No, they are too sonically adventurous and lyrically downbeat to ever fit into that category. I could understand your friend trying to make a point about songs such as "Desert Island Disk" or maybe sweet sounding ones like "No Surprises" (even though the lyrics are quite bleak). They do have that calm and cool vibe, but even then, these are songs that move forward and develop in the kind of artistic way that safe artists usually associated with that category would never be able to do.

So, no. Radiohead will never be adult-contemporary. Unless adult-contemporary stops being a safe, by the book, predictable radio "genre". I'd say Radiohead are introverted-contemporary. Hahahaha

I'd say Radiohead have entered the world of adult contemporary pretty easily since In Rainbows, it suits them
