Radiohead Lyrics

House of Cards

I don’t want to be your friend
I just want to be your lover
No matter how it ends
No matter how it starts

Forget about your house of cards
And I’ll do mine
Forget about your house of cards
And I’ll do mine

Fall off the table,
Get swept under
Denial, denial

The infrastructure will collapse
Voltage spikes
Throw your keys in the bowl
Kiss your husband goodnight

Forget about your house of cards
And I’ll do mine
Forget about your house of cards
And I’ll do mine

Fall off the table,
And get swept under

Denial, denial
Denial, denial
Your ears should be burning
Denial, denial
Your ears should be burning
Denial, denial

Released: October 10, 2007 digitally, December 3, 2007 CD & Vinyl
Found on: In Rainbows

House of Cards” is the eighth track on the 2007 album In Rainbows. The song was released alongside “Bodysnatchers” as a promotional single and video from In Rainbows in late June 2008.

Some of In Rainbows was recorded at Tottenham House in Wiltshire England, a Grade-I listed building, which dates back to the 1720s. The house had a haunted ambiance, which imprinted itself onto the album. Bassist Colin Greenwood explained in an interview with Mojo magazine February 2008 how the producer Nigel Godrich took advantage of this: “Nigel recorded the smudges and fingerprints of those rooms and put them back into the sound later, like the reverb on the ‘House Of Cards’ vocal. His computer is like a rattle bag. He can pick out any sound, irrespective of where he recorded it, then map it on to a track we recorded somewhere else. Amazing.”

The song was nominated for three Grammys for the 51st Grammy Awards: Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, Best Rock Song and Best Short Form Music Video.

The music video, made by James Frost and Aaron Koblin, features rendered images of Thom Yorke’s face as well as those of several other people, interspersed with images of suburban landscapes, and people coming and going at a party. In lieu of traditional cameras, the video is made with lidar technology which detects the proximity of objects from the sensor. This gives the video a grainy and grid-like appearance. Sheets of acrylic glass and mirrors are passed in front of the lasers to create scenes in which the image appears distorted, partially disappears, or begins to disintegrate as if being carried by wind.

The video was made on a minimal set in Florida. The data used to make the video was released as open source under Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 license and is available at Google Code.

Quite some time ago, possibly here on this site, I read something to the effect that
what Yorke was on about in this song was anybody’s guess; but the first time I lis- tened to this very fine song I figured it must’ve been inspired some by the film “The Ice Storm.” Wonder if such has ever been commented on…

How’s this for a delayed response? I just heard this song last night 1/6/14….and thought the same thing.

I thought the same thing!! This is very interesting, I wonder if he ever spoke about it

Thom seems to be quite clearly saying “no matter how it stops” near the beginning, not “no matter how it starts.”
